What Does Christian Hope Look Like? (part 2: Ramon Llull)

Several years ago, Evertt Huffard put me onto the story of Ramon Llull. This wealthy young man grew up in the 13th century in Mallorca (now part of Spain). At the age of 33, he had a religious experince of some sort and became a Franciscan monk, giving up his wealth and social standing in the process.

He wrote a number of philosophical and scientific works, some of which were controversial in his time yet foreshadowed later discoveries. Many church leaders didn't take his academic pursuits seriously because he lacked educational credentials.

In the years 1285, 1304 and 1314, he undertook trips to northern Africa. His intent was to convert Muslims to Christianity. He was forcefully expelled on the first and second trips. On the third trip, an angry mob of Muslims from the modern-day country of Algeria stoned him (though the historical record is sketchy). He died perhaps as a result of his injuries at the age of 82.

A pretty unremarkable life. A very unsuccessful missionary. Or so it would seem.

In 1276, he founded a monastery on the island of Mallorca. Monks from that monastery were among the brave souls who would much later establish the Christian missions along the California coast. These missions ensured not just a Christian presence but that Christianity would be the dominant force in the spiritual life of California.

How many thousands and millions of people can thank Ramon Llull for this foresight and courage? How does his life represent a glimpse of the Christian hope?

I believe everything will work out in the end. The people of Northern Africa may of not been so open then, but God still loves them and will not give up on them. There may be a few believers there now because of Llull being there. Who knows, one of the Muslim men that stoned him may of had a similar experience to what Paul encountered after Stephens' death. No matter what, God is still there and working.

Galatians 4:1-7 & The Confusing Apostle Paul

Does Galatians 4:1-7 confuse anyone as much as it does me? After studying this for some time, I am prone to agree with the words of 2 Peter 3:16. "There are some things in [Paul's letters] hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures." I hope I'm not one of the ignorant and unstable people. But I'm in the camp of folks who can say that Paul's writings are occasionally hard to understand. Let me clarify what I'm having a hard time clarifying. I don't really think it's difficult to understand Paul's point in Gal 4:1-7. The broader context makes it clear. Paul says that the Law of Moses is inferior to the promise previously made to Abraham. Gentile Christians, he writes, are descendants of Abraham because they share the same faith in God (3:6-7) that Abraham had (Gen 15:6). They therefore don't need to obey Jewish rules and customs. Still Freezing in Abilene

So I've been in a class all week titled "Missional Ecclesiology." It's taken me most of the week just to figure out what the title even means, but it's been a thoroughly invigorating week. Basically, the class is about how church can become a people who are more fully dedicated to the Kingdom of God. Of course this brings up all kinds of questions. If we are going to reshape our churches to more accurately resemble a pursuit of God designs for creation and humanity, what exactly is his aim? Is he merely interested in us going to heaven? Is that what salvation means? And how do we live our communal life in a way that nurtures this vision of salvation? These are deep questions and not so easily dismissed. For example, when I grew up in church, the primary concern was to be saved from sin and not go to hell. So how did we answer this concern?
