Jeff Walling & Northside Christian Church

I've heard a few bad sermons in my day.  Shoot, I've preached a few bad sermons.  Do I hear an Amen?

But last night was not a time for bad sermons.  Jeff Walling traveled across the US from Charlotte to Fresno to speak all weekend at Northside Christian Church.  Jeff preaches for the Providence Road Church of Christ.  That's "Church of Christ" as in a cappella Churches of Christ.  That's "Church of Christ" as in the group that has tended to think they were the only ones going to heaven. 

With that kind of mentality, you shouldn't be surprised to learn that our preachers didn't get many invitations to speak outside our "bonds of fellowship."  Sure, Max Lucado is "one of us."  Thanks to his success as an author and to his gentle, ecumenical spirit, he speaks at churches of all persuasions.  But he is the exception.

Since 2005, a handful of our preachers have received occasional invitations to speak in Christian Churches.  Thanks to a unity gathering of the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ, some ministers have exchanged pulpits.  A few of our top-notch speakers like Jeff Walling have received invitations to speak in large Christian Churches like Northside here in Fresno. 

Jeff did a great job last night.  To use Robert Reid's 4 categories, he speaks beautifully in the "Encouraging Voice" as a preacher.  After you hear him speak, it's hard not to say, "Lord, may this be so in my life."

I'm thankful that Northside was willing to invite a preacher from a formerly sectarian segment of Christianity.  It speaks well of them.  And I'm grateful for Jeff who speaks God's encouraging words to the hearts of so many people.

It is interesting that Jeff Walling (and Max) cannot speak at many Churches of Christ.

Jeff Walling is a people Pleaser and some ministers has let Satan traps them. Providence road church Of Christ is a denomination church now and you need to call it what it is. Why should the nondenominational churches of Christ invite you to speak. Jeff Walling has been trapped by Satan. God’s word has never change and why do Jeff Walling feel that he has the right to change God’s word this is absurd.

Does Galatians 4:1-7 confuse anyone as much as it does me? After studying this for some time, I am prone to agree with the words of 2 Peter 3:16. "There are some things in [Paul's letters] hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures." Love It or List It: We Sold Our Church Building

On October 8, 2023, we held our last worship service in our home of 59 years. We're moving on to a temporary location while we wait for God to reveal where our more permanent home will be. It's been a journey for which there is no solid road map, but we feel blessed by what's happening. We formed a giant circle for the final song at our longtime, northeast Fresno home. In late January, our elders announced a shock decision. We would be selling our church building and moving on. Among the elders, it was an uncontentious and unambiguous decision. They 100% believed it was in the church's best interest to put our property on the market and find a new home. Many congregations have hard choices to make about aging properties that are oversized for today's churches. Selling seemed the most desirable option to our board in our circumstances. In Memoriam of Larry Locke, My Father

My dad Larry Locke took his final breath this afternoon. He was in the comfort of his own home in Lebanon, Tennessee. It was as beautiful a spring day as Middle Tennessee can provide. Lovely breeze. Chirping birds. Blooming flowers. But Dad had been unable for weeks to notice the glory of God's created world. He was ready to go and be with the Lord forever. Over the last 2+ years, Larry had struggled with dementia and previously undiagnosed depression. A lifelong runner, he had never spent a night in the hospital prior to this sickness. The loss of his vitality was a blow to all who knew and loved him. While his first hospitalization returned him to a level close to his old self, subsequent declines and hospital stays left him a shadow of the man we knew.
